Free browser OCR

Use the original screenshot rather than a photo of the screen. Crop away toolbars and empty margins, keep text at its original resolution, and avoid shrinking it in chat before uploading. Low contrast and tiny text are common causes of missed characters.

Optional AI OCR

Choose the language that matches the screenshot. Free English OCR downloads its engine and language data from this site; other supported languages download their own packs. If layout matters, you can explicitly switch to AI OCR, which uploads the selected image and uses credits.

How to extract text from a screenshot

  1. 01Capture the area you need, then paste or upload the image. JPG, PNG, and WebP are supported. Each image can be up to 10 MB and 25 megapixels; free mode can queue up to ten images.
  2. 02Select a language and run the conversion. Compare the editable text beside the source. For error messages and code, pay special attention to 0/O, 1/l, quotes, brackets, and leading spaces.
  3. 03Copy the text into an issue, search query, or note. Export TXT for plain text, Markdown for a .md file, or JSON for reuse. OCR does not execute extracted code: review anything you plan to run.

Check the characters that change the meaning.

OCR is a transcription aid, especially when the original text cannot be selected. It is not a substitute for the original source code or document. Our code sample shows why punctuation and indentation need a human check before reuse.
